The story that we have come to know as the rich man in Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31 is one of the more challenging but important stories that Jesus ever told. It shows us that there is a Heaven and hell. It shows us that each of those destinations are forever and that there are no second chances in the afterlife. And it shows us the power of God’s Word that should lead us to faith in His Son Jesus Christ. It is challenging though because many of Jesus’s points are “hidden” by 2,000 years of cultural evolution. One day Jesus was on a journey to Jerusalem and he invited a man to follow Him. To which the man responded… I will follow you but first, let me bury my father. To which Jesus responds with… “you let the dead bury their own dead.” That seems harsh! What did Jesus mean by that?

If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. Those again are the words of Jesus Christ. Hate your family. In fact, he says unless you hate your family you cannot be His disciples. Such a person IS NOT His disciple. That’s harsh, blunt, and really hard but what does it actually mean? What is Jesus saying to us and what does it mean for our life?
